The iPhone is one of the most popular and widely used smartphones among its other competitors, and with each new update to its operating system, iOS, users can expect new features and improved performance.
But the phones also experience some bugs and issues that ruin the experience for some users. For example, we recently flagged an issue with the wallpaper.
With the release of iOS 16.2, some users have reported an issue with blank or empty notifications appearing on their devices.
Problem with blank or empty iPhone notifications
Reports (1,2,3,4,5,6,7) suggest that the recent iOS 16 update has brought a new issue for iPhone users where lock screen notifications appear blank or empty.
The issue has been reported by users of several iPhone models, including the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.
Why am I getting so many blank notifications in iOS 16.2? Is this happening to anyone else?

The problem seems to have started with the iOS 16 release and persists even in iOS 16.2. Users have taken to various online forums, including Reddit, to report this issue and seek solutions.
The blank or empty notifications issue seems to primarily affect WhatsApp and other messaging apps.
Users have reported that the notifications appear blank on the lock screen, but when clicked, they open the companion app and the message can be found.

Some users have also reported that the notifications appear blank or empty in the Notification Center as well.
Possible solution
A possible solution for all iPhone users is to force close the affected apps and restart the phone.
Restarting helps for a few days and then it comes back. (16.2 14 hours)

To force close an app, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open the app switcher, then swipe left or right to find the app you want to close. Swipe up on the app preview to close it.
After force closing the apps and restarting the phone, the blank notification issue should be resolved.
Another possible workaround for iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max users is to disable the Always On Display feature.
This feature, when enabled, keeps the screen on even when the phone is locked and seems to be causing the blank notifications issue for some users.

To disable the feature, go to the Settings app, select Display & Brightness and toggle off the switch for Always On Display.
Apple has not yet acknowledged the problem, but users can try the workarounds mentioned above to fix the problem for now.
It’s likely this will be fixed in a future software update and we hope the developers are happy to help those affected.
Until then, stay tuned and we’ll update this story with any further developments.
