But starting October 24, it will be possible for any iPhone owner to join Fitness+ – even without an Apple smartwatch.

Apple Fitness+ is a paid service, like Apple Music or Apple TV+.

It gives you access to thousands of studio-style workouts and meditations taught by great personal trainers.

They guide you through workouts of varying lengths and intensities, while tracking your progress through the app on the screen.

Normally this uses body-monitoring sensors on the Apple Watch, but iPhone owners can now join in with an estimated calorie burn.

iPhone owners will get access in the upcoming iOS 16.1 update.

This new version of iOS will be rolled out on Monday, October 24.

You can watch Fitness+ classes on iPhone, iPad or Apple TV.

“We built Fitness+ to be the most inclusive and welcoming fitness service in the world, and the response from our users has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Jay Blahnik of Apple, who heads Fitness Technologies at the tech giant.

“We wanted the amazing impact of Fitness+ to reach iPhone users.

“It’s easier than ever to start your health and fitness journey.”

Fitness+ is not free: it will cost you $9.99 / £9.99 per month or $79.99 / £79.99 per year.

But you get three months of Apple Fitness+ for free when you buy one of the following:

  • Apple Watch Series 4 or later
  • iPhone 11 or later
  • iPad 9th generation or later
  • iPad Air 5th generation or later
  • iPad mini 6th generation or later
  • iPad Pro 11in 3rd generation or later
  • iPad Pro 12.9in 5th generation or later
  • Apple TV HD
  • Apple TV 4K 2nd generation

And if you’re already an existing Fitness+ user, these purchases will give you a one-month membership instead.
