M3GAN director jokingly teases Annabelle Crossover

Director Gerard Johnstone jokingly teases a possible crossover of M3GAN and Annabelle that pits the killer puppets against each other.

Director Gerard Johnstone hints that a Annabel crossover could be in M3GAN‘s future. The upcoming James Wan and Jason Blum-produced horror film centers on an android with the appearance of a young girl, designed to be a friend and protector of the newly orphaned Cady (Violet McGraw). This arrangement soon has dangerous consequences for everyone involved, as M3GAN gains self-awareness and dedicates herself determinedly to her basic function. M3GAN isn’t Wan’s first horror project centering on a killer puppet, with the producer having previously worked on the film Annabel franchise and compare M3GAN to an intersection Annabel and The terminator.

While talking to entertainment weekly, M3GAN director Gerard Johnstone took a stand in the debate to determine the deadliest killer doll between M3GAN and Annabelle. The question was put to producers Wan and Jason Blum, as well as Johnstone and star Allison Williams, with Wan and Williams hinting at M3GAN’s potential power level and Blum stating that while Annabelle would be more of a challenge, M3GAN could take down the killer doll . Chuckie. Johnstone put his money on Annabelle for her supernatural nature, but teased that a movie featuring a fight between the two is the only way to really determine which doll would win. Who would win in a fight between M3GAN and Annabelle? Well, I guess since Annabelle is a demon, maybe she would win. Maybe we should make a movie and find out!

How M3GAN differs from Annabelle

Considering Wan’s involvement in both Annabel and M3GAN, Johnstone’s banter could eventually become a reality in a future movie, especially since the popularity of the M3GAN trailer online has already led to talks about a sequel. It would be equally creepy and funny to see the two puppets go head to head, but also fascinating because of their many differences. While Annabelle and M3GAN were both intended to be companions for children before going rogue, the pair differ in several ways, from the powers they possess to their origins.

Johnstone’s comments point out the main difference between M3GAN and Annabelle, the former is a man-made AI android while the latter is a simple porcelain doll possessed by a demonic spirit. Unlike the much more modern M3GAN, which is created by Williams’ scientist character Gemma in the upcoming film, Annabelle is a vintage doll that has been passed down through the decades. The latter interacted with and haunted many families, while the trailers indicate that M3GAN only interacts with Gemma, her niece Cady, and those around them. Another essential difference between M3GAN and Annabelle comes down to their goals and purpose. As a demon, Annabelle covets human souls, but M3GAN’s purpose is comparably noble, as the android seeks to protect her young charge Cady.

The information released about the upcoming horror movie indicates that M3GAN will go to great lengths to achieve this goal. With that in mind, as well as the many possible modifications M3GAN could be equipped with and her superior intelligence, it’s possible that M3GAN could defeat the demonic Annabelle if the demon-possessed doll threatened Cady. As Johnstone states above, the only way to determine the strongest killer dummy is to see one M3GAN and Annabel crossover, the possibility of which depends on the fate of M3GAN in the movie.
