What you need to know
- WhatsApp is rolling out a new useful feature for the iOS platform.
- It is called “Message Yourself”, which allows you to converse or save messages with yourself.
- These are reportedly end-to-end encrypted and the feature is currently in beta for Android users.
WhatsApp, owned by Meta, is one of the best messaging apps, with its end-to-end encrypted chats also offering a lot of features. A new feature in the works that is said to be released is called “Message Yourself”. It is said to be currently available in a stable build for iOS users.
As noted by WABetaInfo, the new feature allows users to send messages to their own phone numbers. To be clear, WABetaInfo’s shared screenshot gives us a clear idea of what the feature will look like on users’ WhatsApp home screen. It will appear as a chat just like other contacts on the conversation page.
Although it appears in the contact list on the messaging platform, it is addressed as “You” next to your own contact name. The report further states that this feature can also be found on all your linked devices, including your smartphone or computer. It is unclear whether it would also be seen on the web-based version of WhatsApp in addition to the native dedicated app.
Most importantly, like other individual chats and group chats, the “Message Yourself” conversations are also said to be end-to-end encrypted.
The feature is officially rolling out to iOS users, with a 22.23.74 construction number. Apparently iOS users have been able to find their own songs in the past, although the feature appeared to have been removed earlier this year.
Meanwhile, the feature is currently available via WhatsApp beta for the Android 2.22.24.11 update for Android devices, according to WABetaInfo. The functionality is quite similar on both platforms.
The “Message Yourself” feature is by no means new or exclusive to WhatsApp. A similar feature is available on its rival Signal, called “Note to self.” While you can’t chat with your phone number, it does show up in chat to jot down quick notes, addresses, or documents, just to name a few.
Telegram also has a ‘Saved Messages’ feature that works the same way. Social apps and professional apps like “Slack” also let you chat with yourself, which can be an easy way to transfer notes or files between devices. We expect this WhatsApp’s new feature to work similarly.
It seems that WhatsApp is busy introducing new features, and some of them have recently appeared in testing phases as well. Earlier this week, WhatsApp appeared to be testing a new companion mode that can be paired with another phone or tablet. In terms of new features, WhatsApp introduced a new Community feature early this month. This allows you to bring current groups on WhatsApp under one roof.
